Murgaon Education Societys College of Arts and Commerce B.Com Review By Sailee Tendolkar

MES College of Arts and Commerce, as the name itself explains, offers courses for not only in Arts and Commerce but also self financed courses in Computer Applications and Business Administration. Since 2016 they have also started with post graduation courses. It is affiliated with Goa University and has an accreditation by NAAC with B Grade (3rd Cycle) and A+ grade by Goa University.

The current admission process is held online. The current officiating principal of the college is Dr. Meenakshi Bawa. The college was founded in 1972 by Late Mr.Vasantrao Joshi. Mr. M.S Kamat was the founder principal and presently the chairman of MES.

I did my Bachelors in Commerce through MES College which is a three year degree course. There are no such entrance exams to get in admissions for commerce or arts. However there is a certain required cut off, that usually ranges from 50-55% minimum, secured in 12th Boards.

I was pretty sure I wanted to study commerce when I joined this course and MES being the closest to my home, that's what I chose. However, it turned out to be my second home in the 3 years that I spent there. Teachers are encouraging, always pushing students for various events and activities. There are students across various fields, so a wider exposure.

There are around 60 faculty members across all streams and around 20 faculty in commerce department. The senior teachers have been in the college for over 20 years and some have completed their term and retired, making place for fresh talent to flow in. There are senior teachers from MES who have also written prominent textbooks in accounts and taxation.

Most senior teachers are done their PhD through Goa University including the current officiating principal, Dr. Meenakshi Bawa. Most teachers are experts in their subject with several years of training and experience.

During the final year in college (3rd year) there are placements for which companies come for campus recruitments. Prominent Companies such as Axis Bank, ICICI Prudential and Reliance Jio have placed various students through campus recruitments over the years.

There are also Airline companies that offer various packages for in-office jobs. In 2019-2020 batch around 57 students were selected by various companies. One of my Juniors was offered a job for a starting package of Rs. 2.6L per annum.

There are hostel rooms being built currently. However hostel facilities haven’t been started as of now. There is a canteen facility. The contractors of which change over the years. During 2010-2015 the contractors were pretty decent, the food was hygienic and the rates were affordable. However to give an honest opinion, the college needs to work its security.

There hardly three security guards and the campus is huge. There are various entrances and exits making it difficult to track on who enters and exits. Recently measures have been taken by fitting in CCTV cameras and gates for the main building.

The college campus is huge with around five buildings for graduation and two for MES Higher secondary. It is located in Zuari Nagar, at a distance of around 2 kms from Goa Airport and the area is among the most prominent areas of the city. It has its own canteen building, gymkhana for sports, basketball court, library, NSS room, Seminar Hall, staff rooms, health room, common rooms and computer labs along with other special cells.

There is also a small cafeteria. Apart from these facilities in the college campus, there are various food outlets, medical stores, stationary and cyber cafe shops in the vicinity.

As a student, I have enjoyed my college life at its best. There are multiple competitions, events, sports and programmes held for students that are inter class as well as intercollegiate. The students get a wide exposure by organising various national level and state level events such as Ecofest organised by Economics dept and Commerce Fiesta by commerce department of MES College for which the students take active participation in looking after hospitality of students coming from various different colleges.

There are various clubs such a commerce club, economics club that organise competitions such as debate, elocution, sports activities etc. throughout the year. There are also cash prizes being awarded for the same. As a student I myself have received over 15 certificates and awards for cultural as well as academic purposes. There is also college elections held for the College council, there are Christmas, Diwali celebrations held with various events such as rangoli making, star making, carol singing. There's also an annual funweek held in December. Overall it’s a fun learning growing experience by meeting students of diverse culture (also there are Afghan students studying there).
