Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies BBA Review By Nidhi Karnani

NMIMS has a strong foothold in Management studies and after scoring well in the entrance this was my first-choice college. We were among the latest batch students of the newly introduced course BBA as previously the course was different and our syllabus and all was new. The college believes in making student more proficient and therefore without any reason extended the classes so that student can experience how it is working at the same place for long hours. We used to abuse college then but realized that importance today. We often used to get jealous looking at the Arts and Commerce students but at the end of the day it was worth the pain. NPAT is the way to enter NMIMS and one need to score big only then they can stand a chance. Management quota is there as most of the students came through back doors.

The course was titled towards building professionalism and therefore many added subjects were in place. When we compared our books and subjects with that of Mumbai University it had a vast difference. The college has added specialization subjects and that was the best part as after the common first year, we can choose our specialized subject and go on with that. I chose Banking and the syllabus helped me get to know the know-how of banking system. The reason why I am working as a loan appraiser today is NMIMS. I did MBA post BBA but my basic was cleared while I pursued graduation. Academic wise NMIMS is the best college in Mumbai and the numbers speaks for them. I don’t think my rating even matter as they were the best, are the best and will remain the best.

Don’t think this is right but yes, they were inclined more towards the students coming from management quota. They felt like they need some extra help and sometimes I felt as we were left alone. The faculty though was roped in as per the syllabus life for our banking, the faculty members were the ones who had experience in the same sector. This was a good idea and an out of the box thinking as hiring the experts has what made this college the top ranked college. Sorry for being a little harsh but this is what I experienced a decade back. I hope things must have changed now as the college has maintained its top spot.

There are internship and placement cells who work day in and day out to make sure the students get the best exposure. I still remember that as soon as we entered the last semester the college arranged internship program for us and that was one way of showcasing what we have learned. I impressed the Lodha Group where I did internship and they were ready to hire me. However, I had ambitions of higher education or else I had the placement opportunity. Like me many of us were offered the same opportunity. Thus, there’s no denying the fact that one will get placed easily from NMIMS.

There’s rented flats by the management for the girl’s hostel. Thus, it's not like a hostel room but a full-fledged furnished flat at a walking distance from the college. Same is for the boys at a different location. However, the capacity is less and therefore they have a merit list for the hostel accommodation as well. The hostel flats have all the facilities like TV, geysers, and basic kitchen equipment’s. Many students come from outside to study at NMIMS and therefore there are various flats easily available in Juhu where many of them used to stay.

The college building was revamped the year I joined. The college was centrally air-conditioned and the quality of classrooms was just amazing. The campus can be termed tiny but, in the locality, where the college is located having that much area is also a huge ask. The college also owns a sports complex which is near the college building and sports were held there. The facilities that were available at the campus include auditorium, gym, and 2 canteens. A sizeable library and a common hall. The college campus was fully Wi-Fi then as well and it was our college that has shown way to others.

Just like Mumbai, you will find metropolitan crowd in the college as well. Students from North East too were my batch mates and were a bit surprising. The college issued strict warning against any form of racial abuse or using sexist comments. As a girl, all I know is that felt completely secured as there were guards in place and one complain is all it took to get the matter sorted. The best moments were surely the time spend during 2-day fest. The college fest is called Umang and various Bollywood and political personalities used to come and encourage us. Umang was cultural fest and for BBA and MBA students there was another fest called Insight which was based on the theme of finance and business. I still stay nearby college and never hide from boasting to my friends that I am an alumnus of this college.
