Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (locally known as the BE college) has a huge history of its own. Established at 1856, this is the 2nd oldest Engineering college in India. The college has a title of Institute of National Importance and comes in the group of NITs (National Institute of Technology). It has a recent NIRF ranking of 35 for the Engineering courses. It offers good on-campus placement and alongside many students also pursue higher studies and off-campus jobs as well. The great alumni network of IIEST Shibpur surely helps its graduate students to secure a decent job.

The college offers 9 undergraduate courses (departments): 1. Department of Aerospace engineering and Applied mechanics 2. Department of Civil engineering (oldest in this college) 3. Department of Computer science and technology 4. Department of Electrical engineering 5. Department of Electronics and Telecommunication engineering 6. Department of Information technology 7. Department of Mechanical Engineering 8. Department of Metallurgy and materials science 9. Department of Mining engineering. For getting admission in this college, one should give the JEE-Mains examination and clear it with a good all India rank. Then by the JOSAA counseling process, the seats are allocated. 50% seats are reserved for home state candidates and 50% are for other state students. Reservation is also their as directed by the Government of India.

The faculty members are no doubt very talented persons. All of them have completed their Ph.D from various IITs and most of them are researching on their own fields and projects. Their background is very strong and they always try to teach in a healthy and effective way for students. Classrooms have projectors and professors use them very well for slides and PPT and other things. Students are also encouraged to do many extracurricular activities along with their studies. This helps them to secure a good percentage along with building skills for their own.

The institute has its own Placement Cell that helps students to acquire their dream jobs in the industry. They also take various sessions to teach about the norms of the interviews and all.

The institute has residential facilities but it's not enough for boys actually. Many students do not get this facility for the lack of hostels. For girls it’s enough. The institute is building new hostels to overcome it. The hostel life is undoubtedly very interesting. Students have fun in hostels. Hostel provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Infrastructure is a bit old but it's still tolerable. Annual sports are being conducted to have the students engaged.

The campus is huge (113 acres), covered with greenery. It has a main academic building with some departments in it. Another is an 8 storied SnT building where 1st year's classes are being conducted. There are some more buildings for some specific departments and labs as well. It also has a student’s Amenities Centre, Netaji Bhawan, and some more buildings.

The overall campus life is very thrilling. There are clubs for almost every genre such as coding, music, photography, videography, dance, acting, robotics, and many more. Students can join the clubs and can interact with alike minded people as well as the seniors to polish their skills and to learn new skills for them. Rebecca is the annual cultural fest of the college Along with some other departmental and tech fests like Impetus, Instruo, Robocon, Nerdcon, etc. College has two grounds, Lords and Oval to play outdoor games as well as basketball court, volleyball court, badminton, chess, etc. are also being played.
