Jyoti Nivas College MBA Review By Suku Ponmozhi

Jyoti Nivas College is not ranked that high but it’s a nice college. First of all, it’s a girl’s college started by nuns and the group that handles the college is from France. We have them as the only male visitors because other than that there are hardly any men invited to the campus. The college is a milestone as the college mostly stays away from the limelight and still holds a great reputation among the women’s colleges in the country. After UG in B.Com, MBA was the only option and Jyoti Nivas was always on my mind as I knew many friends of mine who passed out from this college and have always kept the praise coming for the college. Since I am an alumnus of Jyoti Nivas, I can say that Jyoti Nivas deserves all the praise coming its way. Jyoti Nivas infrastructure and all may not be that fascinating but still has enough to keep attracting students from all across the country. Even Presidency University didn’t have the swag that Jyoti Nivas has and learning new things daily is what made me more comfortable or rather close to the college even after passing out.

MBA sounds tough but it isn’t. The passing ratio of MBA is more than that of B.Com as students who choose MBA are engaged in studies and want to learn things. This is a major difference that you will find in students who have done MBA or PG from a regular college for that matter. Jyoti Nivas has many specialized courses that are autonomous and initially, I was allotted a seat in PGDHRM but because someone vacated a seat in MBA, I got that. The studies were more of practical sessions and HR being my specialized subject we were trained accordingly.

Have you ever seen an all-women’s faculty in a Management college? The college has taken women's empowerment more seriously than the women in general I feel. I don’t doubt their teaching ability but I still feel, if the students are chosen on merit why not teachers then. From the faculty resources in terms of faculty that were available on campus, I would say they were above average. The teaching methods were a little outdated but the explanation part deserves thumbs up.

Many companies in HR have started hiring women and therefore all the girls of HR were placed. Overall the placement was 80% but for the HR division, it was 100. All the banks be it government or private have had women at the top positions and that inspired me to try for bank. As soon as I saw JP Morgan on board I made sure that I need a position with them. Luckily they were impressed with my knowledge and skills that I earned at Jyoti Nivas. Likewise, banks, and IT companies are where many students applied and were happily offered a job during the campus placements.

A girls hostel is inbuilt inside the campus. Jyoti Nivas College Hostel had too many rules and I once thought of staying at the hostel to avoid traveling but once I saw that, I was like I can’t stay here. A prayer before the meals and all which we used to do during the school lunch breaks are followed at the girl's hostel. The dress code is also there as there are limitations on what one can wear. A hostel though is needed as the college invites many outsiders and having a girls hostel has helped the college attract students from other states.

There are 5 buildings in all and all almost the same. Luckily they have blocks written otherwise one can get really confused. Every college has certain facilities be it small or big like the library, auditorium hall, hostels, and medical rooms. Jyoti Nivas also has that I will discuss what different facilities it has. Since it’s a Christian College, there’s a Chapel inside the campus. To make sure girls stay fit there’s a gymnasium and a Zumba hall. There’s a branch of South Indian Bank and offers all the banking services inside the campus. There are many labs but one unique lab at the campus was the media lab. It was used by the journalism students but I had the luxury to use graphic designing at the lab as MBA presentations required some editing. Then comes the most unique thing that you will find at a college campus and that is a zoological museum. Hat’s off to college for keeping some unique things at the campus as I felt worth writing about them. The museum was reserved for Zoology students and other branch students were denied entry to the museum.

It was the performing arts studio at the campus that consumed all our free time. From theatre training to a public film screening the studio was used for many purposes. One of our batch mates was a stand-up comedian and she just lit up the studio whenever she performed. To perform at the performing study, we had a student union room where we practiced all of that and planned all that we had to do at the annual functions. Studies never felt tiring or boring as I used the college campus for many other purposes which I couldn’t during my B.Com.
