NIT Durgapur is one of the best private colleges we have in India. Having done my bachelor's in private college also, I found NIT Durgapur most satisfactory. Academically the college is good but placements wise it's great. I won't blame anyone if they're at NIT only for placement. Many clubs are there at NIT celebrating different festivals. Though the infrastructure is not that good, the students' spirit and excitement is the one thing that keeps the college famous alive. Many traditional festivals like Holi, Diwali, Dussehra, Durga Puja, etc. are celebrated by students with enthusiasm. All this I heard from my seniors because due to the pandemic we had our classes online but still all students used to celebrate fests and events on zoom calls.

The rate of students passing the semester examination is almost 100%. The syllabus is up to date and teachers are highly qualified in their own field. Every faculty has teachers who own doctorate degrees. Various workshops are also taken by different companies in the middle of a session which provide an exposure to students to the industrial and field work. The syllabus is vast so you have to gear up your studies from the start. You don't wait till the exam comes and then you'll start to study. If you want to score well, start studying the day you get into NIT because there is a hell of a competition and studying is the only way to survive in that.

When you're pursuing your masters, do not expect any faculties to spoon feed you. They'll take a 45 min lecture only. And though there is a rule of 75% attendance, it's not necessary to attend all classes. You have to make your own notes from reference books to study for the exam. I feel that every student's academic experience is different depending on their own perspective. Exams and sessional exams are taken regularly. Academically I found NIT Durgapur satisfactory. Many faculty staff has written books which are quite helpful in studies, try to learn from those too.

Placement record is more than 90%. Many reputed companies like TATA Steel, TATA Power, Capgemini, CESE, Microsoft, Flipkart, Supriya, Reliance Industries, JPMC, Wells Fargo come to NIT for recruitment. The CSE, ECE and IT branch students have more scope in placement than other branches, out of which the CSE branch has the highest record for placement. NIT is good for placements, with more than 100 national and international companies coming for recruitment at NIT Durgapur. I had heard a lot about NIT's placement and academics being great, that's my only reason for choosing NIT for my masters.

Hostel life improves one very important thing, confidence and self-dependence. Hotel building is poor. One look at the building and you will mistake it as a 100 year old building but if you can stay there, you can stay anywhere. The memories you build there remain with you lifelong. You learn some great life lessons while staying in a hostel and you learn to do some basic chores like cooking, cleaning, laundry as well. While my masters was fully online, I had started in a hostel before. There is a special bond with your mates at the hostel because they will have the solution to your every problem. Value your free time and utilize it.

The college is old, like somewhat 50 years old, so the infrastructure is not that good. The construction for the new building is going on but at a very slow pace. The experimental labs are also in very poor condition. Only CSE and IT labs are good but otherwise I heard from many of my seniors who had different fields that the labs are pathetic. The instruments at the labs also don't work most of the time. Though they say ragging is strictly prohibited in the college area, senior students carry in on. If nothing, then the NIT brand name will help you a lot in future. Take that from me.

NIT Durgapur has national importance. The college name is helpful if you want to go abroad. The college has gem of students who have gotten admission on the basis of their merits only. Donations don't work here most of the time. As compared to any private college, NIT is a lot better in all the terms. There are many clubs in college for extracurricular activities like music, dance, art, coding, social work, sports, etc. Newcomers should really join one of the club's if they want to have some amazing experiences in between their studies. College fests like Recstacy and Aarohan are celebrated in the college (we celebrate them online only). With college fests, many traditional festivals are also celebrated in NIT.
