National Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Sumit Sourabh

NIT Durgapur has a deep connection with ICFAI because many students from ICFAI have gone there for studies. I looked up at my seniors and some juniors followed my footsteps to aim for this College. Many people don't even know about NIT Durgapur as it is considered a remote area but most NITs are in remote locations. The earth shattering pace at which the University runs its schedule will blow away the ones who are not meant for it. I know it will look a bit exaggerated but NIT Durgapur has got something which no other College or University has and that is the pace of studies. You can talk about IIT Bombay’s, NIT’s Calicut or others but NIT Durgapur has maintained its stance that we will run ahead of schedule. If there’s one thing that can’t be taught then that is schedule planning because it happens and it goes in vain. Once, you have got the formula of executing plans then that means you have learned something from NIT Durgapur.

At NIT Durgapur, it was made clear with students that we will have to develop. If one skill is developed, we are pushed to see if we could develop another. NIT Durgapur is a College that hasn’t gone to surveys or asked students to promote and it’s completely raw by the way. This is the reason why NIT Durgapur may not have generated its name in academics that it has. In short NIT Durgapur is a body that was inborn with physical attributes and doesn’t have to hit the gym to develop the body. Amid all the promotion that I am doing, it’s the hardcore 100% placements of NIT Durgapur that should do the talking about its academics more than anything else.

What happens is that faculty always remain under the shadow of management and students' performance so their values are never hyped. I am not allowed to name the professors, but they have won various national and international awards for their teaching. So, what NIT Durgapur has done is brought award winning professors for students because the College is clear that they don’t chase the rankings but they do care where students of the College are landing up. Just like the alumni meet, the College also used to have a faculty meet and the professors who have taught here for 20-30 years come during that meet. Faculties are taken care of greatly by the Institute and in-turn they take care of the students studying here.

2018 was a year of joy for many at NIT Durgapur. I had one more batchmate from ICFAI, and we both were very nervous because we came this far to prove some point to someone or the other. Before the placements, the assistance that we were provided ensured that we will have placements no matter what, as we have cleared all our subjects till then. Indian Companies like Wipro, Infosys were there but who will care about them when the College also provides placements in IBM and CISCO. It took a lot because the interview rounds were conducted one after the other and as soon as they ended, the party never ended at the campus till we left.

There were seven residence halls in all for boys and it doesn’t matter whether you are a UG student or a PG student, the residence hall for 1st year students remains the same and we had to change that in the second year. Being a pure vegetarian, it became a little difficult for me to adjust to the food because the menu consisted more of non-veg food than the veg. Breakfast was the heaviest meal that I ate at the mess as lunch and dinner always used to have more non-veg dominated food. Along with seven residence halls there were two girl’s residence halls as well.

NIT Durgapur is amid the forests and the campus too looks like one because woods consist of a large part of 200-acre NIT Durgapur campus. The buildings looked more of heritage kind than the modern types. The labs and all have been upgraded but the exterior hasn’t. It’s alright though because the first and foremost thing that I was taught at school was never judge a book by its cover.

It’s hard to mention all the points on which the College is good at. It is in the eastern part of India and I come from the North. I could have adjusted to West or South but East, I never thought about in my wildest of imaginations. I don’t know whom to thank for giving me such a wonderful campus life even though I am not from the same state, I was presented the opportunity to host a function in which the chief guest was none other than Bengal’s CM, Mamta Banerjee. Likewise, many politicians and celebrities were invited regularly for seminars and conferences.
