TNNLU Tiruchirappalli Fee Structure and Scholarships

Tamil Nadu National Law University (formerly Tamil Nadu National Law School) is located on the Tiruchirappalli - Dindigul Highway NH 45 (20 kms outside Tiruchirappalli). It has a quite large and well maintained campus with a more tropical island look. The campus area is an average 24 acres and is divided into Auditorium, Admin Block, Amenities Block, Men's Hostel, Women's Hostel, UG Block, PG Block, Library, Training Center, Guest Accommodation, Basketball Court and Indoor Badminton Court. Peacocks and Puppies can be seen around and can be petted.

I had chosen B.Com LL.B. (Hons.) as my interests aligned with more commerce related subjects. In the first year both the degrees have the same subjects and within the second and third year we have minimum two common subjects and have common classes held by the same subject professors as well. You would have to clear Consortium of NLUs (CLAT) examination to enter into National Law Universities. If there are open slots then the University will offer them to requesting students on call. Four seats are reserved for Government School Students. Examinations are held on a semester basis - first half of semester, Mid-Semester, and second half of the semester, End Semester. There is no proper time allotted for preparing for both the semester examinations.

The Fee for both the courses are same from Rs.1,85,000 up to 2,00,000 depending on the criteria or quota. The SC/ST quota have Rs. 1,00,000 tuition fee exemption mandated by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Scholarship and financial aid facilities are available for specific quotas and schemes mandated by the Government of Tamil Nadu especially to Government School Students.

Professors are hired on a contractual basis and are experts in their own specific field of study and subject. Most of the professors are even returning alumni so they really connect with the students and share relatable personal experiences on how they could perform in their subjects and improve their overall performance in the University. The faculties are also assigned the role of "Mentors" to a particular group of students where they are able to address the grievances and problems of the students and how to handle or report them effectively. The Teacher to student ratio is like min 40-50 students in each course class and for six subjects, six individual professors are allotted and sometimes there are two professors available for the same subject assigned to two different classes.

There's a committee - Internship and Placement committee of the University which is available for students to provide them with internship and placements upon the completion of their courses. The ratio is very low. For example, in a course if 50 students pass out only 17 of them manage to get placements. So the opportunities range from Tier I to Tier III Law Firms.

There are three residential blocks available within the campus namely Men's Hostel, Women's Hostel and Faculty and Staff Quarters. The Hostel can house nearly 500 students (each). The Boys and Girls are separate and are apart from each other by 350 meters. The Mess food quality is below average as the caterers are working from a Government contract basis. The Hostel Fees is on an annual basis. The students are allowed to leave the hostel and the University premises anytime of the day but the curfew is set at 10 p.m. and no exceptions will be made unless and until you had requested and possess a hostel out pass. My personal experience is that the hostel is neither good nor bad.

There is a Canteen run by a private contractor available to everyone at the Amenities block in the Campus. Apart from that there are a lot of small private stalls available within the Campus with snacks and food items available for the students to choose and eat from including a bakery. There is a Large Library within which a moot court is utilized to demonstrate how proceedings take place within a court hall and are also used for competitions. The Classrooms are equipped with whiteboards and projectors for the faculty to project PPT's and for the students to present their findings of an assignment and projects.

My honest opinion is that for starters, the campus life is absolutely average and that's all. There are a lot of committees but only one or two students per batch make it into it and the selection process is absolutely screwed- if you're not on the professor’s good side then good luck getting into any club at all. The University organizes moot court, arbitration, competitions both online and offline. The Fests and Events in this University are somewhat okay to be honest. Overall for the campus life in this University, if it was not after meeting certain special people who made my life better in this University.
