IIT Kharagpur Average Package is approximately 15 LPA to 20 LPA

Being from a middle class family I have dreamt about getting into this Institute from Class 11. I didn't get much exposure to Engineering before, so I was very much excited. It is one of the largest campuses having a jungle spread on half of its area. One will not get bored as there many things to do. On every weekend, there are some programs going on at Gymkhana. There is excellent senior junior interaction; most of the seniors are very helpful. There are many societies as well which you can get into in first year. Overall, the experience is pretty good.

After clearing JEE Advanced, I got Mechanical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. In most IITs, students don’t always get the course they are interested in; rather it depends on their rank. In my case as well, I got this course based on my rank. Every year an exam called JEE Advanced is conducted, through which you can secure admission at IITs by obtaining a good rank. Additionally, you must pass your 10+2 with at least 75%. There are no other eligibility criteria. The admission process of this Institute is very simple. You have to go through counselling process of JOSAA and then the Institute is allotted. After that, a physical verification is done at the Institute level. There are mid-semesters, end-semesters and various class tests. Usually mid-semester exams carry 30% weightage and end-semester exam carry 50% weightage, rest are in the hand of professors. The curriculum is well-designed with modern world challenges. They integrate AI in the various courses. The overall curriculum is really good.

The semester fee is around Rs. 1,46,000/-. In this, most of the amount is for the tuition fee which is around Rs. 1,00,000/- and the rest are hostel and mess charges. If you are from SC / ST category or belong to a general category of family income less than Rs. 1,00,000/-, the tuition fee will be waived off. There are various other scholarships in the Institute. Usually, the scholarship amount is Rs. 60,000/- per annum.

In my department, the faculty members are really good. They are very enthusiastic and ready to help if you reach out to them for any doubts. You can reach them at their office also and they will have no problem in that. Most of the faculty members have done their Ph.Ds from various prestigious Institutions across the world. Most of the professors teach on blackboard by writing things with chalk and they also make little use of PPTs. The teacher-student ratio is 1:20. The faculty members are very much approachable.

There is a CDC (Career Development Centre) which manages entire placement related activities. CDC conducts various sessions before placements and internships. There are many companies that visit our Institute. The renowned companies are Google, Microsoft, Adobe, JP Morgan, BlackRock and many more. The highest package is usually in crores and average is around 15 LPA to 20 LPA.

There are around 21 hostels in Institute (approximately 16 hostels for boys and 5 for girls). I live in ‘Nehru Hall’. This is one of the oldest hostels in IIT Kharagpur. Sundar Pichai also stayed here. There are facilities like Wi-Fi, cooler, geyser, LAN connection, etc. The mess food quality is average as most of the hostels. They serve food 4 times a day (2 heavy meals and 2 light meals). Hostel and mess fee is usually around Rs. 40,000/- per semester. There are no timings in the hostel; you can go out at anytime.

The campus features multiple academic blocks, including the expansive ‘Nalanda Complex’, which houses vast classrooms capable of accommodating nearly the entire student body of a particular course. Classrooms are well-equipped and air-conditioned. The labs are also very good. The central library provides many books. There are separate fields and stadiums for each sport. If you are interested in sports, you can enjoy a lot. My favorite place is Gymkhana.

My overall campus life is pretty good. The campus offers a beautiful night-life. You can roam in the campus throughout the night and no one will ask a question. There is a specific event called ‘Illumination’ which happens during Diwali every year. It is an event of lights and considered as one of the most prestigious events of the Institute. There are many clubs and societies. I was part of the student-run society called 'GYWS'. There are many events such as hackathons, marathons, dances, musical performances and so on. There are two main fests; one is ‘Kshitij’ and the other is ‘Spring Fest’.
