Vishwakarma Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Sanjay Chavak

Vishwakarma Institute of Technology is one of the most reputed engineering colleges in Pune. It has set the tone right for a great balance between studies and other activities. VIT is one of those institutes in India that has a student exchange program and has, therefore, tie-ups with some Universities in Korea and Singapore. Since the college is autonomous the speculations are made with any base and one such rumor that I heard after taking the admissions here was that the syllabus is not completed there and the faculty themselves provides us the question papers before the exams. VIT has produced some of the finest engineers in the country and if they would have adopted this way, people wouldn’t have chased this institute one bit. All these are false rumors as the difficulty level is quite high here from my previous college JSPM Narhe Technical Campus. The syllabus even though it was vast was completed well before time and we never got question papers. To score well in the exams, we had to work really hard and the practice of giving marks was also fairly done.

Being a high-end college, the college has many programs running simultaneously. Every other week, we had some or the other functions and some of them were compulsory to attend. Still, the studies never went out of the equation as the course was completed on schedule and extra classes, long hours were quite a common thing. Even the day scholars were provided bus facility if the classes are not finished on time but the syllabus was done a month before the semester and during the breaks, we were allowed to come to college and ask for any doubts if we had. We were also allowed to use the library facilities during the breaks to come and study there if we can’t at home.

Superb is the word as their work ethics were not normal. You ask them one question, they will answer 10. They will keep creating questions out of questions until they are satisfied that we are clear. The intensity with which they taught was unseen as they never bogged down even if we asked them the silliest of questions. Thus patience, perseverance, and dedication words can be associated with the kind of faculty that is present at the VIT. The number of faculties was balanced as each subject had one dedicated professor and one co-professor who assisted when required.

The placement was one of the main reasons I joined this college and I was more than happy with the placement scenario here. The single figure packages were for the ones who scored less on a consistent basis but still, they could find a job because of VIT. The training and industry-specific roles that we were given were put into training and finally, the placements which happened months before the final semester gave us a sense of relief. VIT Pune Average Package was between 8-9LPA and the placement rate was also 90% for sure. Many students grabbed jobs well in excess of 10LPA and VIT Pune Highest Package was of 35LPA with a Singapore-based IT firm. The numbers were impressive and as a student, we were impressed too with the kind of placement opportunities provided.

VIT Pune provides hostel capacity at a km away from the campus. The hostel neither has Wi-Fi nor any sporting facility. The curfew time was 9 pm for the boy’s hostel and the girl’s hostel was 8 pm. The hostel is located in a residential area and even if the slightest of noise is made the next day a complaint is lodged. Many students that I knew left the hostel as it was quite expensive and staying there didn’t make any sense. I am a firm believer of the fact that the hostel has to be inside the college campus. If it is outside it will be a nuisance. Since I was a localite and stayed some 15 miles from the college still preferred traveling rather than staying in the hostel.

VIT is spread across 7 acres and is an ultra-modern art. The main building was huge and the garden before that was pleasing to the eyes. The park was a meeting or gathering point as some of the facilities like the green room and auditorium remained closed most of the time. The library was also quite small but had books of all niches. There are 4 buildings in all at the campus and all of them have lifts. The college campus has a separate breakfast center and not just the hostel students but even the non-hostel students can have breakfast there. However, a plate of Pohe will cost you 40 bucks which was quite high. There is also a juice center at the college along with a coffee store. Students can choose as per their cravings. One dedicated canteen that was good to satisfy one’s hunger but again it was way too costly. The classes had ceiling fans even after commanding such huge fees was again a drawback. The auditorium though was fully air-conditioned but was open only during events.

The students were great as many outsiders made the VIT Pune Campus even livelier. The seniors were helpful and mingled well with each other. The peer bonding was tremendous and had a lot of fun at the campus along with studies. The students were full of enthusiasm before the fests but became equally serious before the semester exams. The switch-mode always had to be on as the college was highly unpredictable.
