International Institute of Information Technology B.Tech Review By Niranjan Gopal

I got into M.Tech ECE program and a sophomore now and it's been absolutely insane journey so far. I got into through JEE mains, you need at least 99 percentile to get in. It's primarily a RESEARCH institute and so an academic rigour is expected and is said so upfront in the offer letter itself. The sheer amount of workload every day is insane. What sets IIITB ( much like IIITD or IIITH ) apart is their insane curriculum and faculty. What other collages normally learn in 3rd or 4th years, we'll be having then starting from 2nd sem. There is a stress given that ECE students must be apt in many CS stuff and vice versa. In this program you will have to take up specialisation (I am aiming for a dual specialisation in ML and VLSI). Placements are insane with median being comparable or higher than many IITs corresponding programs. You can either go into research in which case you'll have to write a thesis under a Professor in your 5th year or thread the traditionally route that 98% of people will chose - industry. The Cultural and Sports atmosphere here is a little dull since most of the student will be really busy most of the days and they use these days as rest days, which is a shame. But academically I collaborate with my peers in IITM, IIT BHU, IIITH, and many other likeminded people in stuff like competitive programming, GSOC, etc. Any applicant who is serious about academics and only academics should must definitely choose this college since the opportunities, exposure, and experience that you'll get is something only very few colleges in India delivers.

Their curriculum is my most favorite thing (apart from really awesome Professors). For instance right now I am in 4th sem and I have 3 core ECE course :- Analog, Principles of Comm. Systems, and Digital Signal Processing. These 3 are taught simultaneously. I had DSA and Comp. Architecture together. We had to build a simulation of a Pipelined and non-Pipelined 5 stage Processor, and implement few algorithms by which the caches make the CPU run time ways better. So DSA and Comp Architecture had a bit of a complimenting effect that is seen in many places in the course structure. Academically, this college is really demanding.

All are Ph.D holders with strong background in research from IIT or foreign University. But I think students need to understand that there is a huge difference between a teacher and a Professor. Of course you can clarify your doubts, (for often with your peers or TAs) but Professors are more interested in how the student approaches a concept and what interesting questions they ask. But their command over the field is UNMATCHED. I first hand witnessed this in my DSA course, where I explained my algorithm to the Professor and he QUICKLY told me for WHAT TYPE OF EDGE CASES, my algorithm fails. Normally to understand a person's idea takes a while since they are just abstract rules. But the guy had spent half his life on this.

Placements is the single biggest reason any student joined this college. We've had a median of 29 LPA for ECE and 31 LPA for CSE. We have 100% placements every year. Academics will be hard. Gruesome. Hectic. So I'm not even sure that package is enough for what we go through and become capable of doing. If you’re smart and good at this - you'll have the time of your life here. Otherwise keep working hard since, in the end it will yield fruits. We even have summer placements starting from 4th year. We do have an active Placement Cell that helps a lot. Even students who were not that serious about their studies still manage to get pretty good placements.

Hostels are also really great, triple sharing for all boys till 3rd year after that it's single rooms for all. Girls have double sharing and single sharing from first year onwards. Laundry services are fair, with both washing and drying facilities. But drying requires 100 rupess each time which is pretty bad. So I mostly dry my clothes in the spacious balcony. Rooms are really good, both the triple sharing and single room. You are allowed to put posters and paint stuff up on it. There are certain restriction like you can't bring appliance that use power of more than a certain rating. So no induction cookers, coffee maker, or kettle is allowed. Room Cleaning staffs is really thorough and really friendly.

The college occupies only a mere 7 acres, which a downside BUT it is located right inside India's first smart city - Electronic City. We are surrounded my Infosys on 3 sides, Siemens is just a Block away. WIPRO is 15 minutes walking distance from here. I can see all these cool looking buildings all around; the inside of the city is really clean and modern and green. It really boosts your mood with the fresh air and stuff. There are 2 academics blocks - Ramanujan and Aryabhatta, and 3 hostels Bhaskara, Lilavati, and Visveshwarya. This is adjacent to the academic blocks, which is a huge plus point. I sleep at 4 AM just like any normal engineering student and wake up at 9 AM and get dress and off I go to the Lecture at 9:15 AM after a 5 min. quick breakfast. Mess is great with 4 star hotel level foods everyday and a really good food committee and that keeps changing the menu every two weeks. We have a huge auditorium where we watch movies and sports (there will be like 20 people in this huge spacious thing, it's really cool to be in an AC hall watching films with your best buds at 12 midnight). Zomato and other stuff takes less than 20 minutes sometimes within 5 minutes since the city is a structured, which is another plus. I honestly love everything about the infrastructure, it's exactly what I wanted.

I thoroughly enjoy my life here. By that I mean both the highs and the lows. There have been moments where I felt I could not make it, and moments where I felt absolute gratitude what I have been able to do here. Going out to Bangalore, the occasional bunking classes for cinemas, celebration even though the crowd is very small and close. Those serious moments when you try to conduct and organise something in clubs, to those silly moments where you shove your friends face in cake for his birthday in the mess - it's absolutely awesome. We have infin8 (our cultural fest), Spandan (sports fest), etc. all are a comfy and lively events where we enjoy each other’s company.
