Thapar University B.Tech Review By Sukhmani Kohli

When it comes to pursuing engineering, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology - TIET popularly known as Thapar University Patiala needs no introduction. Karam Chand Thapar found it in 1956. It is situated in the royal city of Punjab; Patiala. It has stood out and acquired a top-notch position in its domain. It is one of the steering private institutes in the nation. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) officially certified the institute with a category 'A' certificate. Since the college is widely recognized, getting admission is tough but not impossible. An entrance exam is conducted every year, students from any part of India can apply for it. The preference is exclusively based on the credit list. Along with that, an interview of amateurs is carried and the learner is marked accordingly.

I pursued my graduation from Thapar Institute in the course of Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.). It requires a clearance of 10+2 or an equivalent examination with at least 60% scores in three subjects and JEE Main exam. Other than this, the institute looks for a good personality in the student. Also, only Indians are given the preference. I joined this course because my dad accomplished the same and I want to be like him. I scored 70 above in all the subjects. Some of the subjects that gained my attention like Structural Design and Analysis of Structures. Though some were absurd to me like Fluid Mechanics and Dam Engineering. Eventually, I got them all. Interestingly, the placement opportunities are tremendous, one can effortlessly earn a job.

I don't remember exactly but in total there were around 250 faculties and most of them were specialized in Bachelors. The professors here are very well qualified. I remember, most of them when they gave us their introductions at the initial stage told all the students that they have a Ph.D or an equivalent in the same discipline. Along with that, they also had experience of at least 5 years. I think the staff here is irreplaceable. Their manner of teaching is incredible. The teachers here not just focus on teaching the theories but they even made me realize my worth and helped me build a good character.

Thapar University Placement department named Placement council which looks after this discipline. During the year 2019, nearly 300 companies visited our campus, and placements took place. Before that, for 6 months we had to work on a project under the guidance. The highest salary package that year was 39LPA. As far as I remember, 7LPA was the average salary package. Approximately 1000 students got placed. Some of the top recruiters were Amazon, Microsoft, and Infosys. Though this data was quite low as compared to previous years.

There are 13 hostels named alphabetically in chronological order. Out of these, 8 are for boys and 5 for girls. All Thapar University hostels are very well equipped with infrastructure such as gym facilities, RO water, TV room, Newsstands, and so on. I lived in hostel ‘G’. Depending upon what type of accommodation a student prefers, the fees vary. For an Air-conditioned Room, it was different and for a non-air-conditioned room, it was different. Normally, the range lies between 30,000 to 50,000 per semester. The quality of the food is well maintained and tasted homely. The watchman looks after the security and CCTV cameras are installed as well.

I still recollect the initial day, when I got to check out Thapar University campus. I was flabbergasted to witness the beauty of this place. Everything seemed so attractive and welcoming. It was all in a 250- acre land. The best part was that the natural environment over there seemed like heaven. As a student, I came across many surprising facts. The first and foremost being the infrastructure. It was highly efficient and safe. Moreover, there is no match to the unlimited access to wi-fi. And if you are into books, it has got a great library with all kinds of novels stuffed in it ranging from fiction to romance. Professional and supplementary textbooks in addition to the primary ones are available as well. Interestingly, it is open 24/7. We never had to worry about our things, CCTV cameras made everything secure. There was no chance of theft. Moreover, when on weekends we were allowed to visit the family, the transportation facility even made it better. Also, the University was nearly 3kms away from the Railway station and that was a great pleasure. Even though I missed food cooked by my mom, I am glad that the quality and the taste of food at hostels were not bad and looked homely. Hygiene was the topmost priority of the whole campus. Along with that, provision for medical facilities was also taken care of. Labs of all kinds are present from the Mechanical operation lab to the computer-aided design lab, to the food technology lab, to the Power electronics and drives lab, to Heat and mass transfer lab. The list goes on.

For ages, I have been hearing about school life being the nicest of all. At first, I believed this as well. But now that I have graduated from Thapar University, Patiala, I reckon it is absurd to think like that. My college life has been far better than any of my school days. It was an extraordinary adventure to be an aspect of something so big and exciting. Of all the places, my favorite one was the Cafeteria, where all our girl gangs would sit together and gossip. With the passage of time, I earned many outstanding buddies who stood beside me in my ups and downs. If it had not been for them, I would not have survived a minute dealing with all the study material. Group studies were the best, especially during the nights when just before the exam, this girl, Sneha, the most intelligent and amazing girl, would teach us the important disciplines and tackle all our doubts.
