Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Niyati Singh

Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology is one of the top 10 NITs in India. Its NIRF ranking is also very good (under 50). The campus is clean and green and the placements for my course (Chemical Engineering) are good. The seniors are quite cooperative. I will personally recommend this institute to everyone as it has a very good reputation in the Vidharbha region and professors are very well qualified. Most of them have done M.Tech from IITs and Ph.D from foreign universities. They also are working on some very good research projects.

I have opted for Chemical Engineering in VNIT and for the institute you are required to attempt JEE Mains. If you got rank at least under 50000, you will get admission in metallurgy or mining branches. For, reserved categories, there are reservations and they will get a seat even at a higher rank than this. People often think that they will only have a successful career if they opt for Information Technology related courses. But, in a course like Chemical Engineering, there are immense opportunities especially in middle East countries. In India also we have some Public Sector companies like ONGC and IOCL which offer packages of 20-25 LPA to freshers. Other than this, the course is quite interesting. You get to design heat exchangers and reactors for a chemical plant; you get to apply sustainable Engineering to save energy and environment.

Faculty is well qualified here. Most of them have done M.Tech from IITs and Ph.D from foreign universities. They also are working on some very good research projects like Molecular Simulations, Lithium - Ion Batteries, etc. One can assist them in these projects and can build a better resume. But, the teaching in class is not that good. Some of the professors don't teach properly in the class and only read PPT but they are very knowledgeable. If one asks them about something personally, they respond and answer in a good way.

We have a training and placement cell at our institute. Placements are good for core as well as IT sector. Here the highest package was 64 LPA for previous year and it almost remains same every year. Average package was 10 LPA which is good. In our course, 72% students got placed last year. In Computer Science branch, the placements are almost 100%.

We have residential facilities at our Institute. There are 2 girl's hostels and 10 boy's hostels. Infrastructure of the newer hostels is quite good but the older ones are average. We have mess facility and the mess food is above average. We have a badminton court in the hostel and some sports equipment. New girl's hostel has 11 floors. Each floor has a common room and 50 rooms. Some Common rooms have a TV and some have TT tables. Each room has a chair, a table, almirah, a bed, a fan and a window.

The infrastructure of the institute is quite good. There is a big library with all the important books required for the complete course. There is also a big reading hall in the library where you may sit and read. The library is made in a British building style which makes it look quite attractive. The institute also has a big sports' complex with a cricket ground, football ground, basketball court, 3 TT courts, a lawn tennis court and 5 badminton courts in it. It also has a yoga hall. Then, we have a large auditorium with the capacity of 5000 people at a time. All the important concerts and events happen there. Then, an open air theatre is there where all the students gather for the celebration of any festival or to watch cricket world Cup. The institute also has a swimming pool and a life skill training camp.

Overall, the campus life is great here. There are total 32 clubs for different hobbies like music club (Octaves), literature club (Mag.Com), Dramatics club (Halla Bol), Arts Club (Iridescence), Dance club (Grooves), Social service club (Prayas) and many more. There are 3 fests that are organised in the college. AAROHI (cultural fest) in November, AXIS (Technical fest) in March and literature fest (Karwaan) in April. AXIS is also known to be central India's largest technical fest. Many important celebrities like Psycho Shayar, Sachet Parampara, Professor Nambi Narayan and Professor HC Verma have been guests in these fests.
