National Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Bhavya Gupta

NITs are dream Colleges and even though not getting an NIT of my choice didn't hurt me as I could still boast that I am in NIT. More importantly, I have enjoyed my life at NIT Durgapur. Firstly, going so far from my place, and then a thousand things running on my mind, but all were sorted once I spent a month over there. Well, for couples, this Institute is a paradise. The Institute's PMC was one of the most popular spots for couples. Kota Factory which was released recently is based a little bit on NIT Durgapur as we used to have a stressful, and black & white life over here. All the beautiful moments shown in the series were also a part of our campus life, but books consumed our biggest time because M. Tech is indeed one of the toughest courses. More than anything, the skill development that we were taught in the program was such that quitting seemed a better option. In terms of workshops, you will find them in almost every corner of the campus. My account of a couple of years spent at NIT Durgapur were indeed golden years of my life.

Firstly, the admission process exhausted us and then immediately after shifting to our respective hostels, we had classes the other day. Once the classes started, the tough time also started. I saw so many sporting activities and also started imagining my schedule for sports. Well, all were put to rest because class timings were till 5.30, but every other day, we left the classes after 7 pm. Academically one of the toughest phases of my life, but placement numbers that were put on the show kept me going otherwise the thought of quitting was an everyday meme for me. Our book's cover page was decorated with the stickers of 'I will die early' because studies here are never-ending.

Faculties created many joyful moments for us in the classes and I want to thank them for that. If it weren't for the faculty's experience, I don't think anybody could have made us learn so many things in such little time. The saying that old men can make a run for it fits rightly for the faculties here. One can make out the enjoyment that one is having in teaching and this is why the faculty was interesting because they just loved their job. Just one problem, though, is that no one can breathe easily in front of faculties. One can run; one can hide but can't escape from their eyes.

There's no point mentioning the set of companies that come here for placements because it's a given that only the best will come here. So, from the best, the companies that come here are Polaris, Amdocs, Flipkart, Oracle, PWC, and many more. PWC came just a decade back in India and because they have their main offices in the East and therefore, they were the ones who offered some of the best jobs. Average placements for M. Tech here range from 8-12 lakhs. Don't ask about the highest as it has touched close to 50 lakhs per annum in the recent past.

There were 12 halls in all and out of which four were girls' halls of residence. One international hostel too was there, and trust me, it was lovely, or rather one of the best. The rest were average as I changed two hostels in two years. Firstly, I stayed at Netaji Subhash Chandra Hall of Residence and then at Hall 4 which was Swami Vivekanand Hall of Residence. Food was like on the 1st 4 days; I loved it and after that, once it kept repeating, my taste buds too kept deteriorating.

The campus is huge as 200 acres campus filled with lush green grass on all corners needs no acumen to prove that it is one of the most beautiful campuses. One complains if one can make it about the buildings as it is also one of the oldest campuses, so buildings will be in a state of wanting. Coming to the facilities, there are two banks inside the campus and then there's a post office too. Among all the facilities at the campus, the best has to be CIF (Central Instrumental Facilities). The canteen part needs a few extra words because there were 5 to 6 cafes and our favorite still was 'Chandu Tea Stall'. The one which always seemed busy was the Roy Restaurant.

Campus life here is no less than a movie story with a plot of twists and turns. There are innumerable fests celebrated at the campus and some of the main ones were Recstacy, Aavishkar, and Aarohan. Students not from India but even NRI students are a part of the NIT Durgapur campus, so studying alongside them was a new experience altogether. So, campus life gave me a lot of learning and, more than anything else, a good job in hand.
