NIT Durgapur: Club Culture and Campus Life

Experienced around 2 years in NIT Durgapur, it was mixture of everything. Starting from taking part in the fests and events and then being a part of the organising committee and I felt extremely grateful. Apart from that, the professors in my department were extremely helpful and kind. Working with different minded people, understand and communicating with them, learning different languages and celebrating different festivals, all with your loved ones, make it more delightful. The placement statistics as of now are quite good, even the curriculum has been revised for the upcoming batches making it more placements centric. Hence, my overall experience is amazing. The reason why I chose this institute was the placement statics and the NIRF ranking. As mentioned the club culture is quite different from others, which will make you learn most of the skills and help you know where you stand in future.

I chose the department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, always wanting to learn what is behind coding and what making the software part alive. Hence I enrolled in this course. In order to get admission in ECE department you need a minimum of 97- 98 percentile in the general category and there are seats for the PwD students as well. The admission process at NIT Durgapur will be through JOSAA and CSAB, the official allocation sites after JEE Mains and Advanced. There will be 2 exams in each semester, one is mid semester and the other is end semester for the theory subjects. For the laboratory, you will have a viva and perform the experiments in a few of them. Being from Electronics and Communication Engineering, the subjects prepare us for the real life challenges for example; in ISRO we require Communication part, and for NVIDIA and similar companies, the chip design and other related subjects are required.

As from the general category, and the family income above 5 lakh, you will require to pay around Rs. 80,000 for the academic fees and hostel fees varies as per the hostel chosen, which will be around Rs. 15,000 – Rs. 20,000 and not more than that. The academic fees will differ on the basis of your category + family income, which will be shared to you once you choose this institute. There are several scholarships available which again depends on your background, on the basis of income, gender, and other things. But a student can apply to only one of the scholarships or else will lead to obtain none of them and other disciplinary actions.

From the Electronics and Communication Engineering department, I can assure that the professors are very helpful and supportive, asked any doubts will always be ready to help and guide for future. Any official work as well doesn't take much of your time, due to efficient management. Most of the teachers use blackboards while teaching but share the ppts as well after teaching. Several group discussions and ppt presentation are conducted to help students achieve good communication skills. Teacher student’s ratio is also good and all of them have huge knowledge in their respective course. I find the entire faculty very humble and supportive as mentioned and probably one the best departments in NIT Durgapur.

The placement cell is formed from the previous final year students and it works day night to bring up several companies. The very first company for internship and placements that come is Microsoft and takes a minimum of 10-12 students for intern from the department of CSE, ECE, EEE departments out of which 5-7 gets PPO as well. The package as per PPO is 51 lakh and for internships is 1 lakh/ per month. Apart from that several companies like Texas Instruments, TCS, PwC, Nvidia, and other come for placement and internships.

Hostels, the part where all the fun part lies, for girls in 1st year we have Hall 10, in which only 1st year students live and enjoy the most. All the students must reside in the respective hostels. Each room will be allotted to 3 students and hall 10 consists of more than 100 rooms. Both girls and boys hostel are separate and no boy is allowed in the premises of girls and vice versa. Mess food is good, not the best. Served thrice a day and once a month comes ideal dinner where special things are served. The semester fees for mess as I mentioned varies from hall to hall and for hall 10 and hall 13 is approximately Rs. 15,000 – Rs. 20,000. The timings for Hall 10, till 8.30 allowed in campus and then after just in their halls. First years are not allowed to go out of the campus. I personally feel Hall 10 as the best hostel as too many memories are stored in it.

There are several departmental blocks and has an administrative building, New academic building, Main academic building, hostels and Research building are present in the campus of NIT Durgapur. Classes for first years are conducted in New academic building which has a capacity of 200+ students. The institute also has facilities like library, auditorium, Students Activity Centre (for sports), and a medical unit. Libraries remain open till 9 PM on regular days and on examination timings it remains open till 11.30 pm.

Institute crowd is around 6000+ with B.Tech, M.Tech and Ph.D students. Overall campus is well versed. There are several clubs and several activities that occur. I am a part of Entrepreneurship development cell. There are many extracurricular activities including fests for sports, cultural, entrepreneurial, and others. There is also a student body namely Gymkhana which allows the students to take charge of different responsibilities going on in the institute and becomes the voice of 6000+ students of NIT Durgapur.
