IIT Kharagpur has Approximately 21 Hostels

The overall experience e here is very good, as we live like a family here and the locals of the residential area inside the campus are very kind and polite. The Academics, Societies, Sports Facilities, extra-curricular everything is excellent here except few things for which you might have to compromise. For others I would say the IIT Kharagpur will be best choice for them as the academics curricula is also very interesting and Professors are highly qualified as well, and their teaching method makes us understand things in deep, and not only academics we kgpians excel in extra-curricular as well, which you can see our achievements on internet. You know there are many famous graduates of IIT Kharagpur like CEO Mr. Sunder Pichai, Delhi Former CM Mr. Arvind Kejriwal, Actor Jeetendra Kumar, etc.

The Course for which I have opted is Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering. As I said I have keen Interest in Electronics, specifically in Semiconductor Industry, VLSI, and ULSI, So for Electronics, this Institute is the best choice for students. The Eligibility and Admission Process is similar as other IITs, first you have to give JEE Main and Clear the cut-off so that you can become eligible for giving JEE Advanced and then prepare well and give Advanced and get a good rank so that you can clear the closing rank of IIT KGP, take previous year ranks as reference. Then Apply on JoSAA for Seat Allocation and choose you dream and practical choices according to your rank and lock them. Wait until last round until you get your most preferable Institute and course. After this, there will be a confirmation of seat for which you have opted for and JOSAA will give you an Initial Seat Intimation and Provisional offer letter. Then appear here for document verification and, and here you go, you are now a Kaplan. The exams for a semester (typically of 4 months) here are held at every 1-1.5 months which are called the mid and end sem exams, and in between there are Class Tests, Surprise Tests and at the time of End Sem Exam. there is a lab practical Examination as well. The academics is well oriented and aligned with industry perspectives and applications So yeah it prepares us well that we crack into anything either it is going into industry or Research.

The total Annual Fee that I paid for my Course in the Academic Year 2024-2025 is Rs. 1, 00,700. In addition, the fee paid by me in Autumn Semester 2024-25 was Rs. 56,750 and in the Spring Semester, it was Rs. 43,950. Here is a breakdown for the fees I have paid per semester: Tuition Fee: 0 Admission fee was Rs. 10,100 (one time for whole course period) Registration fee was Rs. 400. Hostel Fee was Rs.39,950, Medical Registration was Rs. 200, Gymkhana was Rs.1,200, Technology Film Society was Rs. 100, Student Amenities was Rs.800, and examination fee was Rs. 500. If you are UR/EWS/OBC and annual family income is less than 5 lakh then Tuition Fee is 1 Lakh per sem if you are UR/EWS/OBC and annual family income is between 1 Lakh and 5 Lakh the tuition fee is Rs. 33,335 per sem. If you are UR/EWS/OBC and annual family income, you have to pay Hostel fee per semester and as I said per sem fee varies according to hall, my fee for LBS Hall was Rs. 39,950 per semester.

There are many faculties in our department and they are highly qualified holding PhD and also have done remarkable work in research into multiple domains of Electronics and Communication like interface optical physics and communication, Polarisation Conversion, Insertion and many more. They also have won national and international awards for their work. Some of them have been editor-in-chief in IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and also have achieved the name of IEEE fellow. They have done their PhDs from prestigious institutes all over the world such as University of Michigan, University of California,Texas A&M University, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi etc. Most of the time Professors use the Projector as to show the PPT and Visualisation and many times they also use black board as well when some tough concept comes, for better understanding. Their qualification tells about their Problem Solving Abilities, they are excellent at it obviously, they do complex computations within seconds to one or 2 minutes. The Student Teacher ratio here is almost 20 to 25 students per teacher. We have a good bond with our professors, they are very kind and polite to all, they are easily approachable and always ready to help and guide us in any problem. We can ask questions multiple times, and can visit their office to seek help.

There is Career Development Centre in the institute who help students in getting placements. Students can apply for Placements in final year and Internships in 3rd year of B.Tech. The Placement Season Starts from June or July in the campus, where students apply for placements in their expertise, they build CVs through ERP and CDC conducts test, Pre-Placement Talks before placement for preparation of candidates. There are many globally prominent companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Oracle, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Intel, Nvidia, Samsung, Micron, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and many more visit the campus. Highest and Median Package in last placement Season my department was 1.4 Crore per annum and 21 LPA to 22 LPA, respectively.

Yes, there are 21 Hostels (halls of residences) for students. There is no information about how much rooms a hall have in which students can stay, but as I have stayed in Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of residence. There are 620 to 670 rooms. If we talk about students, there are almost 16678 students in the campus. In each Hostel there are internet, electricity, water and washing machine services, there are LAN ports in each room for each person, there are Stationary, Juice and General Stores are there inside the halls. There are vending Machines as well. There are Badminton, Volleyball, and Basketball courts along with Cricket Net and Gym as well. Girls’ and Boys’ Hostels are separate for security purposes but we can into any hall in hall days. There is no restriction or timing of hostel, any boarder can come inside and go out anytime. Hostel Rules vary according to hall so better to read it on HMC official Notice.

There are many academic blocks in IIT Kharagpur like Nalanda Complex, SRC (Srinivas Ramanujan Complex) which has Vikramshila and Takshshila (sometimes classes take place at vikramshila), Nalanda Complex, IIT Kharagpur Main Building. There are departments located nearby the Main Building, like E&ECE Department, Electrical Engineering Department, etc. There are many Schools and Centers like Binod Gupta School of Management and many Research & Development units situated inside the campus. The campus is the largest campus among the IITs having 2100 acres area. The Nalanda classrooms are very spacious and enough for students, its seating capacity varies with different classrooms but have max capacity of 200 to 300 students. There are Labs for multiple domains situated in different departmental Buildings and in Takshshila and JC Bose Complex. And also we Central Library which contains book from wide range of fields containing more than 3 Lakh of books, and also have Novels, journals, theses and e-books as well, the library provides access to online recourses as well. There are Seminar rooms in departmental buildings and also separate like Kalidas Auditorium, Netaji Auditorium, Bhatnagar Auditorium, Raman Auditorium, etc. There are many Canteens in Halls and also numerous restaurants in the campus, where you can get affordable food. We have BC Roy Technology Hospital in the campus, which is responsible for the medical services inside campus but most of the time many medicines in their Pharmacy are out of stock. For Transport, Students majorly use Bicycles and E-Rickshaw (Charges apply) and there is a cost-free Bus Service as well for classes.

Overall campus life at IIT Kharagpur is very good. You spend the best moments of your life here, I would rate it 4/5, 1 point deduction due to the Hall facilities. There are numerous Societies and Clubs, almost all of them are run by Students, which excel in many extra-curricular and skills on global level as well. I was also part of some Societies like Shaurya and Entrepreneurship Cell, which I had to leave due to my own reasons. There is NSO, NSS, and NCA, which provides a 1 Credit Course in Fresher Year and Becomes Non-Credit but Compulsory to complete, contributes to Extra-Curricular Activities like Singing, Dancing, Sports, and Social Services. There are Groups like SWG (Student Welfare Group) who organize some events, which also have fun extracurricular activities, which students enjoy a lot. Apart from this, there is General Championship, which occurs every year in which students participate enthusiastically in different fields like Sports, Tech, Product and many more.
