IIT Kharagpur's Residentials Facilities: 15+ Hostels & Fees

My overall experience on campus has been great so far. It has been a great experience cycling around in the campus and each time discovering something new. I have some very good friends at campus. Those late-night discussions with roommates remain on top of all the fun. I chose because of excellent placement statistics, strong culture. It has a very strong culture. You name something and there is one society for that. This also becomes the reason if you want to explore stuff, KGP has a group of like- minded peers for each and everything.

I chose B.Tech in Instrumentation Engineering. No other reason than JoSAA results for why I chose this stream. However, after two years into institute, I can definitely say if you want a circuital branch, not getting CSE, then this course is not a bad opportunity. This course opens for you almost all opportunities available to EE, EC students. Yeah, you need to clear JEE Advanced, go through JoSAA process, and courses are allotted according to cutoff ranks. Therefore, your score in Advanced determines if you can get an admission or not. In a 4- month semester, we have mid-sem and end-sem exams along with some class tests and practical exams for lab courses.

Tuition fee per semester is Rs.1,00,000. Along with this, you need to pay around Rs. 40,000 for hostel and mess. Fee waivers are available according to your family income and category. For income- based fee waiver, you need to get an income certificate and income affidavit. Format for the same can be found in the admission brochure. Some other assistantships are also available if you meet the eligibility criteria, details for this can be found on IIT KGP website.

Faculty is generally PhD holder with strong academic and research background. Some faculties teach using PPTs, some write on blackboard, and some on their iPads. Therefore, this really depends on them. Teacher student ratio is good. Most of the faculties are approachable. You can reach them for doubts after the class or get some time from them and meet them in their office. Some faculties even have good industry connections, working with them can really help you.

Placements at IIT Kharagpur are excellent. Placement process is overseen by a separate department, CDC. Many companies, hiring for different role from core to software come to campus.

Yes, Institute offers residential facilities. There are some 15+ hostels in campus accommodating 16000+ students from undergrad, postgraduate and PhD course. Yes, separate hostels for girls and boys. Per semester, Rs. 40,000 for hostel and mess. No rules and timings for coming in or going out of hostel. You have no restriction on going out or coming into the hostel. Therefore, you can roam around freely (if you like to do so) even 2 AM in the morning. The freedom is just the best part.

Campus infrastructure is great. Each department has a separate building which has their labs. All necessary equipment can be found in the lab, of course lot of them are old. Their age is same as college. Campus is just massive in size. You get 4 years to go to every corner of the campus, but you surely won't who would like to go into the woods? Yeah, we have a big library, a 2-3 floor building all filled with books. Also, we have a digital library. To access institute central sports facilities, you might have to pay an additional 500/semester but if you are not that serious about some sport, you can just play most of them in your hostel only. You get badminton court, volleyball and basketball court in all hostels.

Campus life is great. As already mentioned, there is a society for everything acting, dancing, instruments, comedy, debating, and what not. There are also some research groups. Yes, we have a tech fest and a cultural fest. Apart from this, most departments have their own fests.
