Incepted in the year 2008, Rajiv Gandhi College of Engineering and Research has assured a quality education in the core engineering branches. As a newly established college, the institute ascertained that education is imparted in an environment equipped with advanced technology, sufficient academic amenities, discipline and social ethics. RGCER is the youngest college in India to receive NBA accreditation. Admission to this college is as per the scores in the state-level engineering entrance examination. I joined this college in the year 2009, as such I was a part of the first few foundation batches of RGCER. I chose this college as I was getting the branch of my choice. Another reason is that the college is a part of the Meghe Group of Institutions that has a good record in education as well as placement. As a newly established institute, the management and faculty had made sure that the functioning of the college should be very organized and structured. We were expected to strictly adhere by the rules and regulations of the college. The faculty members regularly motivated and encouraged us to have a good academic record and assure a bright future for ourselves, as we were few of those to have an opportunity to set the trend for this brand new institute.
I took admission in the stream of Electronics and Telecommunication, a four-year undergraduate course in the field of engineering and Technology. The institute offers engineering courses in several other streams like Electronics, Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, civil and Information Technology. A candidate seeking admission to this college must have secured more than 60% in the 10+2 examination in Science, Mathematics and the optional subject. If this eligibility is met the admission in various streams is given as per the scores in the MHT-CET examination. The most sought-after streams in this college are Computer Science and Electronics-Telecommunication.
The faculty members were well qualified. Most of them were the postgraduate in their respective fields and many were pursuing PhD. A sufficient number of faculty members and instructors were allotted to every stream. As the institute was new, few of the faculties were on probation. As such faculties kept changing for few subjects. We had difficulty dealing with this issue but in no time, the senior faculty members handled this problem well. Our educators took efforts to develop a good rapport with us. We could approach any faculty from any department. To assure a hundred percent result, they also took time and effort to give personal attention. The faculties along with the management had assured the healthy and efficient working of the college. We also had an opportunity to have a one-to-one session with the Management and trustees several times, to share our views and opinions. The management was active enough to resolve the concerning issues with immediate effects.
There is a separate Training and Placement cell in the college that works on identifying the best employment opportunities and prepares the students accordingly. It annually conducts a workshop on aptitude development, which includes group discussions, interaction sessions with great speakers and mock interviews. The cell has been efficiently working on developing competent human resources that will not only excel in their work but will also be responsible citizens.
Some of the top companies visiting for campus placement include TCS, Wipro Technologies, Infosys, Cap Gemini, IBM, Cognizant and others. I got placed into the Wipro Technologies and the average package received by our batch was Rs. 3.5 LPA which was considered quite good as a starting package for a fresher.
The institute provides a hostel facility for students at competitive rates with a mess and canteen facility. The other amenities includes gym, sports ground, dispensary and meditation center. There is a separate hostel facility for girls and boys. The overall capacity of the hostels is more than 300. The hostel is located in the college premises, thus assuring security and discipline.
Having established in 2008, the complete college premises is a new construction. It is a three-storey building, designed to ensure an isolated area for every branch. There is a separate building for the cafeteria. The classrooms are spacious and adequate occupancy is provided. The campus has a huge library, a separate restroom facility for girls and boys, workshops, laboratories, departmental offices, administrative offices, conference rooms, seminar halls, computer center, basketball court, badminton court, auditorium, and a ground for outdoor activities.
The Annual Social Festival of the college, ‘Malhar’ would be the most awaited occasion for us. With dance, drama, singing, fashion show, color codes and dress codes, this three-day festival would fly in a blink.
Apart from this, there are multiple technical and non-technical events, organized by the college and also by individual branches. The college had always been an active participant in sports tournaments, especially cricket, badminton and basketball. I had been a part of the Basketball team and our team stood as a first runner-up in the intercollegiate Nagpur University Basketball tournament’2010.
